  3. Town Tour Series: Post-Civil War and the Road to Recovery - Virtual

    August 12, 2021, 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM @ Virtual

The Abolitionist movement in Chester County had many adherents but not all people north of the Mason-Dixon Line were interested in participating in the illegal activities required to bring fugitive slaves to freedom. Individuals feared reprisal from the American government, especially following the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850, from their own communities, and from the Almighty. Coupled with a general pro-slavery sentiment in Chester County, most notably in the non-Quaker sect, slavery became a highly polarizing issue. The passage of the 13th Amendment in January 1865 and the end of the Civil War that same year brought new challenges in the quest for civil rights within our county. Join us on a fascinating journey as we travel to National Register sites in Chester County related to the Post-Civil War and the Road to Recovery!

  6. Town Tours Series: Touring the history of the Welsh Baptist Historic District & the Mason Dixon Line

    August 19, 2021, 5:00 PM - 7:30 PM @ White Clay Creek Preserve

In 1681, Charles II granted William Penn the land grant that would become Pennsylvania. Almost immediately, Penn had to deal with the southern border with Maryland, a colony controlled by the Calvert family. Both claims overlapped and were considered disputed territory. Penn adopted a number of strategies to get people on the ground quickly to establish settlements is his name. Among them, the Penny Acre Tract was the first official survey for land in what would become London Britain Township. Nearly six decades later, Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon surveyed the Mason and Dixon line to establish an accepted border. It was in this context that the Welsh Baptist community established by John Evans in the White Clay Creek valley in c. 1714 grew and flourished for more than a century as a near monoculture.
