Tips to Consider
- Talk to your family doctor about the vaccinations because they know your family's medical history.
- Consider the best environment for your child's vaccine appointment. Some children feel more comfortable in specific settings, such as their own doctor's office.
- Rely on credible vaccination information by making sure the information you are getting is up-to-date and from a reliable source. Discuss the information you are getting with a trusted health care provider, like your family doctor.
- Learn about vaccine side effects. Not everyone experiences side-effects and most side-effects are mild and go away in a day or so. Learn more about side effects and find helpful tips to reduce discomfort at Possible Side Effects from Vaccines.
- Prepare your children for their vaccination ahead of time by explaining what to expect, how the vaccination will feel (like a small pinch), practicing what they can do the ease the pain (sitting still, breathing deeply, relaxing their arm). Be prepared to distract your child's attention away form the needle while the vaccination is being given. Bring their favorite toy or blanket, turn on music, sing a song, etc.
- Get school required vaccinations as soon as possible to get ahead of the back-to-school rush and to avoid missing any school.
