We want to remind everyone how important emergency preparedness is, read below to learn more!
What is Preparedness?
Preparedness is having the tools you need to combat an emergent situation. This could be making sure your car has fuel before a long trip or packing your bathing suit when you're headed to the beach.
Two general situations to prepare for:
Evacuation:
Many kinds of emergencies can cause you to evacuate. In some cases, you may have a day or two to prepare while other situations might call for an immediate evacuation. Planning is vital to making sure that you can evacuate quickly and safely no matter what the circumstances.
Questions to ask yourself for your evacuation plan:
- Do you have more than two routes to get out of the area?
- Do you have somewhere you are planning to go?
- Do you have "go-bags" packed and ready by your door?
- Have you considered your pets?
Shelter-in-Place:
Sheltering is appropriate when conditions require that you seek protection in your home, where you work, or other locations when other emergencies arise. The length of time you are required to take shelter may be short, such as during a tornado warning, or long, such as during a pandemic. In all cases, it is important that you stay informed and follow the instructions of local authorities.
Questions to ask yourself for your sheltering plan:
- Do you have food and bottled water for at least 14 days?
- Do you have ways to seal vents and windows?
- Do you have alternate power sources for your house?
- Have you considered your pets?
