Mapping 1777 Chester County - Thursday September 8th at 12PM via Zoom

In 2020, the Chester County Archives staff unveiled their award-winning 1777 Chester County Property Atlas. This project highlights property owners, roads, and notable sites of interest (mills, taverns, places of worship, etc.) in existence in September 1777 during the Battle of Brandywine and succeeding events of the Philadelphia Campaign. Learn more about how this project got started, the research behind its data, and some interesting discoveries.

How to Research Military Records and Uncover their Genealogical Treasures - Saturday October 1st at 9AM-12PM at the Chester County History Center

3In this two-part program, discover the who, what, where, when, why and how of researching your ancestor’s military service and history. Hear about military resources at the Federal, State and local levels of government. Find out the benefits and learn how to navigate some of the difficulties of researching at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. In addition, you will learn techniques and strategies to conduct effective searches for these valuable records both on and off the Internet.

Behind the Scenes of the Chester County Archives - Thursday October 20th at 12PM via Zoom (In-Person Option)

stacksSince 1982, the Chester County Archives has been preserving and making accessible the historic government records of the Chester County Government. On Thursday October 20th, we’ll peel back the curtain for a behind-the-scenes look at the Chester County Archives. We’ll discuss the history of this unique department, explore the historic county government records available to researchers, and highlight some local history.

This event will be offered in a hybrid format. Attendees can join us virtually on Zoom or by reserving an in-person seat at the Chester County Government Services Center (601 Westtown Road, West Chester, PA 19382). Once the program concludes, in-person attendees will be invited to tour the archives. Those individuals interested in joining us in person must register on Eventbrite and email [email protected] to reserve your seats. Only registered individuals will be permitted as space is limited.

Researching the history of your property can be a rewarding experience. Getting started, however, can seem overwhelming. It requires an understanding of the basic methods of historical research. Knowing where resources can be found and how to interpret them is a fundamental part of the process. Join Chester County, PA archivists for a presentation about how to begin your research and where to locate relevant records.
