Bluebird Boxes

Volunteers and park rangers monitor approximately 100 bluebird boxes located in Chester County parks.

In mid-April, we clean out the boxes from the winter months in preparation of the spring nesting season. Beginning in May, we start monitoring the nest boxes to see what bird species is occupying each nest. The boxes should be checked no more than once a week to limit disturbance to the nest and babies.

At the end of the nesting season (late-August/ early September), the nest boxes are cleaned out once again. Bluebirds will have on average two clutches of eggs (2-7 eggs per clutch) year.

Other birds that may use the same nest boxes include Tree Swallows, House Wrens and occasionally Chickadees.
