Acting as Your Own Attorney

We highly recommend consulting an attorney regarding legal matters. However, if you choose, you have the right to represent yourself.

The staff of the Prothonotary are not attorneys. No staff member is permitted to offer advice or an opinion regarding your legal matter. They may not provide you with directions or suggestions on how to proceed with your case.

Should you choose to represent yourself, you must research the legal rules that apply to your case. You may conduct this research at the Chester County Law Library. The law library is open Monday-Friday, 8:30-4:30 and is open to the public.

Acting as your own legal representation means you are responsible for accurately and thoroughly researching the rules relevant to your case.
